British Values

The staff and governors at St Mary Immaculate School recognise the multicultural, multi faith and diverse nature of the United Kingdom and understand the vital responsibility that the school has in ensuring that no one within the school is subjected to intimidation or radicalisation.

The UK Government requires all schools in the UK to teach the key ‘British Values’ and sets out its definition of British Values as:

1. Democracy
2. The rule of law
3. Individual liberty
4. Mutual respect
5. Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

St Mary Immaculate School uses topics within the National Curriculum and beyond to teach British Values.

Democracy

The principle of democracy is explored in History and Religious Studies curriculum, as well as in assemblies. Pupils are taught how it works in Britain and why it is important that everyone plays their part in it. Pupils are taught how they can influence decision making through the democratic process and are encouraged to become involved in decision-making processes in school. Pupils are provided with a knowledge of, and respect for, public institutions and services.

The Rule of Law

Pupils learn that as individuals and as a school community we need laws and rules to protect citizens and ensure wellbeing and safety. In individual classes and through the school council, pupils help to review and make some of the school rules. They are taught the value and the reasons behind the laws and rules that govern and protect us within lessons (e.g. History and PE/Sports) and through assemblies. Pupils are taught about the consequences when laws and rules are broken. Pupils are helped to develop the ability to distinguish right from wrong.

Individual Liberty

At St Mary Immaculate School, pupils are actively encouraged to make independent choices, with the knowledge that they are in a safe, secure and supportive environment. Staff at St Mary Immaculate School teach and provide boundaries for pupils to make informed choices, through a safe environment and an empowering education. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised on how to exercise these safely, (e.g. through e-safety).

Mutual Respect

Respect is an important part of St Mary Immaculate School and pupils learn that their behaviour has an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community treat each other with respect and this is reiterated through the teaching and learning environments. Mutual respect is embraced throughout the curriculum by providing the opportunity for students to express their views in a safe environment where the thoughts and answers of all are respected.

Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

St Mary Immaculate School aims to help pupils acquire an understanding of and respect for their own and other cultures and ways of life. Pupils are taught to respect individual differences and to challenge prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour. Pupils are taught about other faiths and communities through RE and working alongside children and their families. Pupils visit local places of worship from other faiths.
