Accelerated Reader

Here at St Mary’s we understand that reading plays an important role in every child’s learning, and so we encourage a love of books from an early age.

Starting in Reception Year, children follow a 'decodable' set of books that links to our phonics scheme ' Little Wandle.' Once they successfully complete this in Year 1 and pass the Phonics Test they are then transferred onto the "Accelerated Reader Scheme" which we use to help monitor and develop each child’s reading and comprehension ability.

Children select a book from their reading level, and when they have finished reading the book they take an online quiz about that specific book. This method engages and motivates the children to progress, and we continue to see the positive impact that this is having on reading improvement throughout the school.

Once a half term to term we 'Test' the children, the results give the children a reading age which translates into book levels. Children then choose to read books within this level. Books within this level ensure that children are reading books they can engage with and enjoy but also challenges them to ensure they move forward with their reading skills.

During this time we have opened up Accelerated Reader so that children can complete quizzes for books they have read at home. Children can log on as they would in school. If you require their log in details please contact their class teacher.

Parents are able to use the link below to search for appropriate books that are within their child’s current reading level:
