Year 3 Class

Advent Preparation Day

Friday 1st December

Today was our Advent Preparation Day. This day was dedicated to getting ready for the liturgical season of Advent. We all dressed in purple and each class were given a theme from each week of Christmas. Year 3 were thinking about Peace.
Throughout our thoughtful day, we made tree decorations, read the story of Bambinelli Sunday, also making our own tiny bambinellis, and wrote Advent prayers for expectant mothers like Mary and those in need or lonely at this time, on strips of card which we all joined as a paper chain to make a huge paper chain prayer.
Later in the afternoon, each class met in the hall for our celebration assembly and lighting up of our Christmas tree.
It was an amazing day, we learned lots about Advent and had time to reflect, considering how Christians prepare to celebrate the coming of Jesus.

Lego discovery trip

16th November
Today Years 3 and 4 had the wonderful opportunity to visit the Lego Discovery Centre in Birmingham.

To begin our day, we were able to explore the centre and build with Lego in the variety of different areas. After eating our packed lunches, we split into groups and had a time slot to go on several of the fun-filled Lego rides. We then moved into the learning rooms and we split again into teams ready for our competition. Each team decided on a team name and then we set about building land yachts, which we then raced against each other by using the power of wind. Each team member had a go at moving their yacht by rapidly flapping their team Lego tray! It was amazing to see those yachts move. Well done to the all team members for their marvellous efforts. What a super day we had!

Rise Theatre - We can all be Planet Heroes

Today we welcomed Rise Theatre group to St Mary’s. they involved us all in their workshop about caring for God’s planet. The theme complimented our school’s Catholic Social Teaching work. When we went back into our class, we used recycled materials to create artwork, about the beauty of the planet again created for us.

Monday 2nd October 2023

Year 3 celebrate the feast of St Therese De Lisieux.

St Therese believed that engaging in little acts kindness for others makes a big difference to their lives. To follow in footsteps, we wrote messages on flower templates which we decorated, to go inside a card for staff and others who help us at St Mary Immaculate. We want them to know we appreciate all they do for us and make them smile. :)

Feast Day for St Therese De Lisieux

Welcome to Year 3! Mrs Harris and Mrs Grierson are looking forward to seeing the children in class.

Coding Workshop

On 21st September, children across the school had the opportunity to take part in a coding/robotics workshop. Year 3 and 4 combined together in the hall and were shown some fundamental skills of coding through a range of fun activities by Matthew from Innovation Pod. These skills underpin computing science itself.

It was a super session, the children had lots of fun and were super at programming their devices to move them around the hall. Impressive work!

Coding workshop

In Year 3, we took part in an Ancient Day, focusing around our class topic of the Ancient Egyptians. We had a great time, we even had pharaohs join us for the day. During the sessions we designed and made our own Canopic jars out of clay. These were used as part of the mummification process to store the organs of the deceased Pharaohs and honour their lives. We also created our own Egyptian collars and learned how to write our name in hieroglyphics.
We had a fabulous day and we are all Ancient Egyptian experts now!

Mission Day On Friday 8th September we took part in our School Mission Day and celebrated St Mary’s birthday, known as Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We looked closely at our School Prayer as a class and thought carefully about what the words mean to us at St Mary’s. Focusing on CAFOD’s Catholic Social Teaching for the Common Good, we wrote our own ideas about how we could ensure everyone’s voices are heard at school and around the world. We also began to look at information about Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, who is our class saint. On her feast day in October, we will look at this in more detail throughout that week. We thought about the virtues of this half term – Grateful and Generous and read the story of the Widow’s Mite, we will be exploring this in more detail during RE lessons. We finalised the day by celebrating Saint Mary’s birthday with special cakes and saying a Hail Mary to remember how important she is in our lives.
